Yamaha 150 vs mercury 150. I like Yamaha over Merc for many reasons but both are good Motors. Either will push your boat and get the job done. I personally would stick with Yamaha and will not by a Merc for anything other than a bass boat after owning yamaha.

In recent boat comparison testing on pontoons the performance on the Mercury line up edged out the Yamaha. I honestly dont know the reliability and longevity side of the two. Id wager the Hondas would edge both out and you also see.

I dont have any preconceived brand preference. I had a pair of Yamaha F150s good motors but expensive and complicated. I like the idea of the new Mercury it would appear to tbe simplier than the current 4 stroke 150s which by the way are the most sold HP engine.

On the other hand Yamaha outboards are generally lighter thanks to advanced technologies and materials. Both manufacturers are neck-to-neck when it comes to warranty both offering 3 years limited warranty. Its also the same with controls.
Both Yamaha and Mercury have digital controls for all their bigger units. There is a more limited list of prop choices with the Yamaha and Mercury standard 425 gearcase. With the Merc CT gearcase you have a much larger list of props to choose from.

So far Im hearing that both engines will feel the same from 0-30. The weight is the same as the 150 but you do get the VVT which makes a significant difference with the hole shot. With 1521 props I am getting top speed of 50 with cruise at around 3800RPMs.
If you wanted less weight on the transom the 140s are significantly lighter. I really like my Merc 150 4 stroke so far. I only have 25 hours on the motor and still trying different props from the dealer.
Its quite and great hole shot. I had a 115 Yamaha that was horrible hole shot so I am aware of the complaint that people have against 4 strokes.
