Bringing it to the neutral detent must put the engine back into normal operating mode. Just bringing it back to low idle position caused the gauge to say winterizing then you can advance the throttle again and then the engine takes over with the process. Hope that makes sense.
You do not want to run an E-TEC dry. The motor stops automatically as part of the off season storage program controlled by the EMM. My opinion is yes you should winterize.
