The lifespan of a 2-stroke with straight gas is short because the lubrication to the bearings and piston is brought by the gasoline-oil-air mixture. Some seal issues but that looks to be an age issue and not so much of a use issue.
Five years or 500 hours for the latest G2 engines.
How long will a 2 stroke outboard last. On average an outboard motor will run about 1500 hours or 7 to 8 years. Each outboard motor will be different but if you keep up maintenance and take care of the motor it can last much longer. Depending on our needs as anglers different outboards will be better for us.
It seems many have an opinion on how long an outboard lasts and for every one answer there are many others who can cite instances to the contrary. Some believe that a motor should get between 1000 and 1500 hours of life and some cite 20 to 30 years of service. Two-stroke outboard motors can reasonably live between 1500 to 2000 hours before needing major maintenance and 4 stroke engines can last longer.
All engines will last even better with proper maintenance and preventative measures. How many hours on a 2-Stroke Outboard is considered low hours I know from experience that a used auto with 85K miles is probably passed its prime - but whats a good rule-of-thumb for hours on an outboard. How long should they last assuming proper maintenance and not too much abuse.
Is 350 hours a lot. With that said 2 stroke technology has changed substantially in the last 5-10 years. Direct electronic injection changed everything.
The cylinder sealing advantages of 4-strokes disappeared with the advent of electronic DI. However DI makers still have to deal with crankcase lubrication. Technically a properly set up and maintained 2 stroke outboard should almost run forever as its lubricant is in the fuel.
It amazes me that people think 1000hrs or. I would guess a 2-stroke 250 should last around 40 hours between top ends. That is IF you keep up on all maintenance items – air filter tranny oil etc.
The how often and how hard matter but theirs no way to know unless you keep track of the hours you are actually running the engine and riding it. Furthermore how do I know if my 2 stroke is. Opinions on how long a container of pre-mixed 2 stroke fuel will last for varies significantly some say it is only good for 3 4 weeks and others up to 2 3 months.
In my experience it depends on the motor but all motors will perform best with a full tank of freshly mixed fuel. Fresh is best High Performance Motors. How Long Can a 2 Stroke Run Without oil How long can a 2 stroke run without oil LOL about as long as it will take you to right a check for 1800 LOL Sounds like lucked out big time.
I have seen engines run on straight gas for about 3 minutes and lock up. Your compression may have been 107 and 120 for a long time but that is quite a difference. The 2-stroke outboards I can think of work real good only issues are running them without oil.
Some seal issues but that looks to be an age issue and not so much of a use issue. And these are old school 2-strokes. In the marine world it has to be reliable.
I believe it was Mercury who ran a 2-stroke for 50000 miles non-stop. Ran 247 with refueling and driver changes while underway. An open container of 2-stroke oil is usually fine to use for up to 2 years.
Alternatively a sealed container will preserve the quality of the oil for up to 5 years. And if you are just sick and tired of dealing with gas oil and small engine repair be sure to read Gas vs Electric. The two stroke outboards are lightweight and compact yet deliver high power output.
The engine structure is relatively simple and maintenance is exceedingly easy. Although we have lineup of four strokes we also offer an extensive two stroke lineup to meet. How long before 2 stroke gas is bad.
The question was asked in the form of opinions I wont use fuel older than 30 or more days unless its been treated. 30 of Marinas repair business here is due to fuelethanol related issues we have a much bigger problem here due to the humidity and the fact that ethanol attracts moisture thru the tank vents as opposed to the boaters up north. Evinrude E-TECs have a longer service interval than other outboards.
Five years or 500 hours for the latest G2 engines. Being two-stroke engines they have no crankcase oil to change and have fewer moving parts than four-strokes. Some of the numbers Im seeing posted may be accurate but they give me reason to wonder.
15 to 20K thats equivalent to two to three years of 247. Now granted the more an engine is run at long intervals the longer it will last because its the heat up. When they lose compression they tend to be hard to start and lack power.
If everything else is properly maintained they could technically last a very long time unless you let it go too far and score the cylinder. I would assume it is the same for an outboard. Two stroke engines are easy to understand and work on compared to 4 strokes.
A low-emissions Merc 150 OptiMax two-stroke is priced at 12650 while the supercharged four-stroke Mercury 150 Verado is 12650. On the Yamaha side a 90-hp two-stroke with a 20-inch shaft is 7170 while a similar four-stroke Yamaha F90 is 9350. The other key advantage of the two-stroke models is light weight.
Usually 2-stroke engines without oil will run several minutes or several kilometers of driving before dying. The lifespan of a 2-stroke with straight gas is short because the lubrication to the bearings and piston is brought by the gasoline-oil-air mixture. A typical two-stroke or four-stroke outboard engine should provide 1500 hours of run time.
Based on the average use of 200 hours per year this will last 7-8 years. However changing your oil every 50 hours of operation and regularly flushing the engine can see your outboard engine last 10 to 20 years.
